A lot of people consider buying a resort in the Philippines when they are making that epic decision to leave their old life behind in their native country, but that decision should be studied carefully with a keen eye to the true facts. Though most of us expats initially have this rosy picture of standing behind a tropical beach-side bar lazing the day away serving beer and chewing the fat with other laid back foreigners, the reality of owning and operating a resort is usually far different from that picturesque daydream running its tape inside our heads. I know this from first hand experience.
I initially fell in love with this country as a tourist and figured that if I owned the place I was staying at, the only thing that would change was that now I would be making money instead of spending it. Well, how wrong this middle aged dreamer was.
For starters, the first thing I found out that instead of lazing around and enjoying myself, as I did in my life as a tourist, running a resort took work. A lot of it! More so than any other business I had ever run, which quickly translated into 15 – 16 hour days with absolutely no time for doing any of the things that had made me me fall in love with this Pacific Paradise in the first place. Then it became abundantly clear that being the actual paid host to tourists was far different than sitting next to them beside the pool or sharing the occasional meal with them. As guests, they can be demanding and had to be dealt with as CUSTOMERS, not as peers, or friends. As a resort owner, you are providing a service, for a fee, and believe me patience, humility and diplomacy better be things you are good at.
On top of those basics realities, any person considering buying a resort in the Philippines must consider all the basic tenets of owning and operating any business whether it be specifically in this country or in the country they are from.
